The INDEPENDENT contracted under the Printing Law to do the Legal Advertising and oil Public Printing and Publuhing of whatever character, for which Lewis and Clarke County it chargeable, and for att Legidatwe and other Printing for the Territory, not provided in the Organic Act. MONTANA MATTERS. Beaverhead has in the treasury. Me'aghcr county's wool clip this year was worth Madison valley produced plenty of watermelons this year. Last week's Methodist church festival at Dillon netted $150.

Dillon wants to put on airs and have her streets lighted at night. There is some prospect of a big smelter being erected at Dillon. Dick Carroll has resigned his place as guard in the penitentiary. Several Deer Lodge horses will take part in this week's races at Butte. Yellowstone Valley has produced an ear of corn fourteen inches long.

There is great irregularity in the mails between Deer Lodge and Helena. W. W. Blair, a Jwsephite Mormon, is evangelizing in Deer Lodge county. Livingston will soon hold a special election to decide whether or not to incorporate.

Harvesting is nearly over in Beaverhead county, and much of the grain is threshed and shipped. The Collegiate Institute at Deer Lodge opened lalt -week with twenty-seven pupils in attendance. The Clarks Fork bottom irrigating ditch is completed and the water courses through the streets of Billings. Jacob Engel left at the Miles City land office last week a Mangel Wortzel beet weighing 14-J- pounds. The commissioners of Choteau county have ordered the building of a county poor house on the poor farm.

Bannack Indians last week stole a fine horse from the stack farm of Raymond in Madison county. George Bruffy and M. H. Lott drove in a spring wagon nearly one hundred miles to see the golden spike driven. A Gallatin county hunter named Fridley killed twenty-two ducks last -week at two shots, and got every one of them.

Jim Petti John and a man named Mitchell had a set-to at Sheridan the other day with a revolver and a club, but no murder was done. It is not expected that Northern Pacific trains will get down regular running time until the Villard excursionists get off the road. The Park Branch train of Sunday brought down the second shipment of 80,000 pounds of bullion from the Wills smelter at Cooke City. The financial exhibit of Custer county, just published, shows the net indebtedness of the county on the 1st of March, 1883, to have been $221,452.67. A Virginia City man sued another citizen last week to recover possession of a ferty- five dollar cayuse and at the conclusion of the suit had to pay costs to the amount of $750.

Out of ilie three car loads of recruits brought in from the east last week for the gariisons at Forts Shaw and Missoula, eight men deserted at Dickinson and were not The Highland Fluming company, Madison county, finished up its summer's work last, week. While the clean-up was not so large as usual, the yield was fair and the dividend to the stockholders very satisfactory. Last week a Miles City cowboy made the poorest hand win by drawing a six-shooter, which drove his opponents under the table, leaving him free to take the "pot," and to help himself to as much whisky ns he wanted. It is not yet fully decided that Cinnabar will bo the terminal town on Park line. Gardiner may yet enjoy the houor if arrangements can be made by which the Northern Pacific can obtain the title to the townsite.

A company formed of Virginia City capitalists have located seven miles of placer diggings along Grasshopper creek, in Beaverhead county, and arc preparing to push mining operations vigorously. Their capital stock is $45,000. An oil stove exploded a Miles City business house last week (owned by Leighton, Jordan and resulted in the destruction of the building by fire. The loss was considerable, but it was fully cov- by insurance. R.

E. Reynolds, of Beaverhead county, J.his season cut six acres of oats which yield- 521 bushels, or eighty six and five-sixths bushels to the acre. He also had one and one-fourth acres of wheat that yielded 105 bushels, or eighty-four bushels to the acre. Thirty thousand pounds of wool are stored away in Missoula, awaiting a buyer. It is the property of Mr.

John Hobbins, who is the owner of some 6,000 head of sheep. He drove about half of his band into O'Keeffe gulch and vicinity a few weeks oitluin. The MaAiMnuin says: Our Helena and Butte contemporaries have been misinformed as to the cause of Mr. J. G.

Smith's death. There is not the remotest reason to suppose that the food partaken of by deceased contained any poisonous substance, as other persons who sat at the same table with him and ate of the same food experienced no 111 effects therefrom. Deer Lodge County has a minister of the gospel who preaches on Sunday, and puts in the week days blacksmithing. He is located at Race Track House, and the New North- West saya: He can "set a new shoe" or throw an old one after a hride with skill, grace and dignity, and we predict that Race Track will be as locally famous for its weddings as Grctna Green. SHORT HEADERS.

A PECULIAR SOUVEXIU. la addition to the used in the regular course of trade, the Gilt Edge displays a beer bottle that has an interesting history. Its cork was pulled by Capt. L. T.

Mead just as the first blow was struck on the last of the Northern Pacific, and while the crowd watched the ceremonies he and his companions drank the contents of the bottle to the success of the road. It is a better souvenir than a sliver off the "last Enterprise. OFFICERS F1HED UPON. George W. Bell aud Dick Carroll, two of the guards in search of the escaped prisoners, returned last Friday, having gone as far as the Jefferson river, Wickes and vicin ity, without finding their men.

Up on the the night of August 30th, they came suddenly near a camp close to the brush and were fired upon. They returned the flre and kept watch on the camp until daylight, when, closing in on it, they found it vacated, and traced a bloody trail from the camp into the brush, but were unable to follow it North- Went. AXOTIIEK MAMMOTH CAVE. A mammoth cave has been discovered in the mountains at the head of Mill Creek, Gallatin county. The discoverer entered it a distance of 500 yards.and its recesses still stretched out before him indefinitely.

It was divided by longitudinal walls into different sections, only one of which he explored. The ceilings were high and covei. with a crystaline formation that glittered like jewels. The floor was reasonably level aud the room explored apparently very wide. A party from Livingston will probably go up and thoroughly explore it iu a few days.

A large amount of the real property in ern Territories has been transferred without much attention being paid to the titles, the result of which Is that very many titles are defective, and It is unsafe without a thorough examination to buy or loan money on real property.

Especially la this the cose in Helena and Lewis and Clarke county. Manr instances exist wherethrough the carelessness of conveyances, property has been Improperly described, and frequently lands are described as in one section, or in reality they ore in another. Many deeds hare not been placed upon record, and a serious break in the chain of title is the result. By Insisting upon having aii ABSTRACT OF TITLE FURN1SUED FROM LOCKET'S ABSTRACT OFFICE Before paying, or loaning money on property, you may avoid litigation. Having purchased the exclusive right to use Henry Willson's Comprehensive System of Abstracts in Lewis and Clarke county, and having had a complete Abstract of the Records compiled, I am now prepared to furnish an abstract of title to each Town Lot, True of Land, Placer and Mining Claim In the county.
