(AP) Short covering and commission house buying extended the advances in rye futures today and the market climbed around 3 cents bushel at times. Wheat, corn and barley also were firm most of the session, and oats advanced fractionally. Bids for cash rye were reported considerably above the September futures price, and trade authorities said this indicated a tight cash situation.

There also was expected to be more distiller demand, since corn will be banned In alcohol manufacture after Aug. 1. Wheat closed to higher than the previous finish, September $1.643, corn was unchanged to up, September $1.18. oats were lower to higher, September 64c, rye was up 1 to 1 cent, September ana baney was to l'a cent higher, September $1.12. (AP) Leading stocks negotiated modest recoveries in today's market althouBh buying was exceptionally timid and dealings among ihe slowest of tha year. Commitments were repurchased here nd there on the idea the list was due for a technical revival after its retreat to the lows of midday. Reconversion apprehension, attributed to thoughts of a short Pacific war, also waned as a price factor.

Numerous customers held aloof, however, to await tomorrow's British election results and developments at Potsdam. Turnover was around 600,000 shares. Foreign Exchange New York. Helena Library Offers New Aggregation Of Interesting Books A collection of short stories, "Leaning Tower" by Katherlne Porter, heads the list of the newest books at the public library this week.

Written with precise artistry, this volume has been commended for its "contrast of delicate perception and deadly implication." Among the new technical books is "Principles of Mineral Dressing," by Antoine M. Gaudin, former research professor of mineral dressing at the Montana School of Mines at Butte. His book, with many illustrations, analyzes and explains mineral dressing in terms of physical and chemical principles. "Ballad and the Source" by Rosamond Lehmann is among the new fiction, a psychological story of a seemingly respectable and motherly old woman seen through the eyes of a young girl, who discovers her true life story and nature. With a background of life in a hospital, "Yeoman's Hospital," by Helen Ashton, has an interesting narrative of complex human relationships.

A newly-published novel that has not been serialized, "Woman in Sunshine," by Frank Swinner-ton, tells the story of typical family life with all its tensions, frustrations, fears and hopes.
