The Independent Record, Helena, Monday, November 26, 1990 When 'rustling' isn't a dirty word 'Tiny' Dagel put a ladder into the pen, and when the pigs stepped over it, the ladder was lifted up. With their legs dangling uselessly between the LYUBEL MEIKLE 4, S' Indian education hearing A public hearing will be held Wednesday night to hear comment about the part of the federal Title program that funds Indian education in the Helena School District. The hearing will be part of the Helena Indian Alliance meeting in the alliance's Colorado Building. The HIA meeting starts at 6 p.m. Just read a late 1800s newspaper article in which a prominent cattle rancher was referred to as a rustler, but there was no insult intended.

Although cattle stealing was called rustling at that time, the editor was using the word in its complimentary sense, meaning someone who was an eager and willing worker a go-getter. The first time I ran across that use of the word it was in an article describing Hereford cattle as good rustlers. This conjured up a picture of a black hatted, masked band of renegade cattle, stealing into a quiet pasture and stampeding off with some hard-working rancher's entire herd. What got me thinking about rustling was another 19th Century article about a new branding procedure. Cattle were run into a chute which had a floor something like a cattle guard.

Then the floor was raised up until the rails rested on the animal's stomachs, and their legs hung down, not quite touching the ground. While in this helpless condition, they were branded with (according to the article) less fuss than in the traditional method. I mentioned the story to a friend who said that a similar technique had been used to steal pigs. The thieves BACK AT Till RANCH rungs, the Dies couldn't fieht. and didn't even I can only assume that they were small pigs or strong thieves.

The entire operation seems like an awful lot of work to me. What this country needs is fewer rustlers (1. To steal, as cattle) and more rustlers (2. To forage actively.) LYNDEL MEIKLE is a Helena native who works on a large ranch near Deer Lodge. In 1950 they moved to Conrad, where he worked for Auto Co.

In 1954 they moved to Helena. In Helena he worked for Capital Ford and Anderson Motors. Beginning in 1958, he owned and operated Tiny's Auto Repair, later Dagel's Transmission, until he retired. He enjoyed fishing and camping and was a member of Our Redeemers Lutheran Church. He was also a life member of the Elks, a Charter member of the Conrad Moose Lodge, where he served as first governor.

Preceding him in death were four brothers, four sisters and his parents. Survivors include his wife; sons and daughters-in-law, Marvin and Marilyn Dagel, of Drum-mond, Ted and Jere Dagel of Missoula and Gary and Kathy Dagel of Helena; daughters and sons-in-law, Corrine and Jim Edwards of Cut Bank, Carole and Charles VanDeKop of Boise, and Marjorie and Don Laughlin of Idaho Falls; one sister Blanche Kieft of Conrad; one brother Els-worth Dagel of Omaha, 19 grandchildren, 17 great granchil-dren, numerous nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. There will be a commemorative family gathering Tuesday from 11:30 to 4 p.m. at the home of Gary Dagel, 2119 Choteau.

Friends are welcome. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of St. Peters. Retz Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. CITY BiilY open Saturday from 10 a.m.

Peter's Hospital following a brief illness. He was 79. He was born on July 30, 1911, in banDorn, Iowa, to Henry and Aduth Rice Dagel. He grew up in Pipestone, where he attended schools. On July 29, 1931, he married Amanda Lussier in Great Falls.

He was 91. Born in Coomeen, County Cork, Ireland, to Hanora and Michael Sullivan, he was raised in Ireland and worked as a mail carrier there. He came to the United States in 1924, where he worked for shipyards in New York and Boston before moving to Butte to join family members.

He worked for the Anaconda Connie Kuster Was Teton County treasurer M. "Connie" Kuster, 63, died Saturday at a Great Falls hospital following an extended illness. She was born in Conrad on Dec. 30, 1926, to Thomas and Helen Dellwo. She attend Choteau schools and graduated from Choteau High School in 1946.

She worked for the Teton County Welfare Department and Superintendent of Schools before being elected county treasurer, a post she held for 16 years until her retirement in 1987. She married Francis Kuster in Choteau, in September of 1951. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Choteau VFW Auxiliary and the Choteau Country Club. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1985.

Survivors include a son, Robert of Florence; a daughter Karen Kuster, of Helena; four brothers, Jim of Choteau, Bob of Bowman's Corner, Gordon of Augusta, and Larry of Bynam; two sisters, Margaret Ann Olson of Milwaukee, Wise, and Annetta Wei-nert of Choteau; and numerous nieces and nephews.
