As the Crow reservation has, by reason of the bill now pending in Congress, attracted considerable attention lately, the following letter from Wm. Hamilton to the Bozeman .1 cant Courier will doubtless be read with interest: He says: 'The Big Horn river was formerly the western boundary line of the Crow hauling grounds. Twenty ycurs ago Fort Uni.n, op posite tho mouth of the Yellowstone, was their trading post. Afterwards Surpie abandoned the posts on the Yellowstone. In regard to the 'friendliness" of the Crows.

1 cun prove of, their killiug nine white men aud stealing hundreds of mules and horses. You, as well as all old citizens of Bozeman, know that in 18(18 9, if it had not been for Captain LaMote and the force under his command, the settlers of Qallatin valley would have had trouble with the Indians. The land subsidy was granted to the Northern Pacific Railroad Company in 1864, and the Crow treaty was not made uuti 1868. It was concluded at Fort Laramie General Auger, Sherman and others representing the government; and Ietry. Clnen and John Uenshaw representing the Indians.

It was stated to the government commissioners that no p'ortion of tlie present lands ceded to thCrows was occupied by while men, or If that portion of Montana Territoiy had been fairly aud truthfully represented to the commissioners at Laramie, neither Boulder, Stillwater, or any other portion of that mouuluinous country west would have been ceded to the Crow Indians. Iu regard to the Crows being desperate fighters and a general terror, I-admit that, should they hrop out in open hostility they muy kill a few white men iud steal a few horses, but I will vouch that inside of twen ty days after a declaration of war very few Crows would be left in Montana. The Crows, teaman, hate every white man in Montana, myself not excepted. The cream of Montana is tlie Crow reservation, and it woDld lc only justice to the citizens of the eastern portion of the Territory to have it thrown open for settlement. The Ward Meetings.

The YVard meetings tonight should bo well attended by all Democrasic citizens interested in the welfare of the city. Tim city government is destined to prove a great benefit to the people of Helena, or a burden which in time will become intolerable. Sine the fire department has been turned oveivlo the city, the tax for city and fire purposes will not he less than six mills, the levy of which will produce a fund of nbout sixteen thousand dollars, taking into consideration tho increased values of city prbperty. In addition to this will le the revenue from tlie police court and the city pound. This, sum will be at the disposal of the city council.

If used judiciously, it will he tlie moons of adding largely to the appearance, the health and safety of the city from fires. If, on the contrary, it he frittered away in fees to petty officers ornamental, rather than useful and the city government be otherwise run on the broad gauge plan, we shall find our revenues wasted, our taxes vastly increased, and little or no benefit derived. Last year the three-mill tax for the city pro duced a revenue of over $7,000, and of this sum, $4, 640 is required to pay the salaries pf city officials, while only $012.75 has been expended upon the streets. These officials may nearly all be styled supernumeraries. The)1 had no existence prior to tho adoption of the charter, but their duties were performed by the county treasurer and assessor, the probate judge, the district attorney und the sheriff and his deputies While the burden of maintaining our retinue of county officials has in no way been reduced, their duties have been largely assigned to another set of officials, and thus the tax payers of Helena are put very much In the condition of party who is required to pay two men to do the wprk of one.

As a necessary consequence, our taxes have been very greatly increased. While the county taxes last year were only 18 mills, tho city taxes were 20 mills. Already another assessment of three mills for city purposes has been ordered, and our public school will require an extra tax of one gnill, in order to run nine months. Hence, oiir total taxes in Helena will probably reach 80 mills per annum, or 12 mills more than the taxes of the county. It consequently behooves the Democratic tax payers of the city to bestir themselves in the interest of economy, retrenchment and reform.

The ball was pronounced a grand success in every particulars. A man whose name is said to be Thomas was arrested yesterday morning on the charge of stealing canned fruit.
