June 10. To the Editor of the Independent. At about 3 o'clock this morning the people of Jefferson city were aroused from their quiet slumber by the shout of fire. Upon arriving at the spot it was discovered that tbe blacksmith ahop owned by Cun Becker was in flames, and the fire was already uncontrollable. About fifty men were soon at the scene and such work as was done this morning would be creditable to many of the fire departments in larger cities.

Mr. Vawter's store was thought to be beyond a doubt a victim, but through strenuous efforts on the part of the citizens and employees of the store, it wns saved, The most remarkable of all was the saving of Mrs. Rohrbaughs house, a building not more than ten feet from the shop. The contents of the bouse were all removed into tbe street and the men thinking there was no chance went so far as to take tbe windows and doors out, but after aTT, tbe fire was baffled and the bouse saved. It is generally thought the fire originated from the blacksmith forge.

Tbe total damage dune will probably amount to $1506. No insurance. Pf.tlr. Chief Gaul and HI mother. An exchange, referring to tbe recent journey oi 1,200 Indiana from the Upper Missouri river to Fort Yates, says that upon arriving at Fort Yates the noted Chief Gaul was met by bis aged mother, and a very affecting scene transpired that wss.of course, unstudied and natural, and yet dramatic enough to place on the Btuge.

The mother of the notod chief, upon seeing him, ran forward and placed her head upon bis boaorn, knelt at his feet, kissed his hands, and wept, and made maDy familiar demonstrations of joy. Gaul, stolid and indifferent, tpoke not a word, but gathered bis robes about bim and walked away as might Cardinal Richelieu, at a moment when he thought of France, bis own conspiracies, and triumphs over hie enemies.
