Silvers said she is disappointed that eighthgraders are forced this year to trade health class for foreign language.

"It's a pivotal year, and mental health issues and healthy lifestyle choices won't be reiterated in eighth grade for those students," she said. "I'd like to see a seven- period day so they could have both, because they are equally important. Both Schmutzler and Silvers would like to find ways to help students be more engaged and informed. "I'd love to create a system to get students aware of what the issues are," Schmutzler said. He'd like to see a place where more students could voice their opinions.

Silvers said often opinions end up on bathroom walls instead of appropriate places. Both say they'd love to see students attend board meetings, but there are rarely students in the audience unless they are receiving some sort of board recognition. A topic that Schmutzler would like to see the board visit during the coming school year is an adjusted GPA for honors and AP courses. "It would be a real tangible incentive for taking those classes," he said. Schmutzler and Silvers juggle many roles beyond students and board representatives.

Silvers is on student council, Gay Straight Alliance, and is the team captain for the varsity girls tennis team. Schmutzler is on the CHS speech and debate team, and will likely be the debate team captain. Both students say it's obvious that trustees appreciate their dedication and input. Trustee Libby Goldes says she appreciates having students as part of the board. "We rely on them to give us insight to the thoughts of their peers," Goldes said.

"Everything we do affects them, and their insights are invaluable. They give a window into how things are going on in the schools," she said. "They have an impact."
