Espelin as chief of start" at Shodair Children's Hospital and from 1 973 to 1 974 as chief of staff at St. Peter's Hospital, the year in which the new hospital was built. His professional affiliations included a fellow, American Academy of Pediatrics; Board Certified" American Board of Pediatrics. Montana Medical Association and American Medical Association. He was recipient of many national and state awards including the Mary E.

Soules Award from the Montana Public Health Association. He always maintained a thirst for education and new and exciting challenges. In 1996 he trained in the specialty of treating impotency and in 1997, with his wife Elizabeth, founded the Mens and Couples Clinic of Helena. A native of Great Falls, Dr. Espelin graduated from the College of Great Falls, received his medical degree from the University of Utah, College of Medicine and did his internship and residency at the University of Utah.

He had been active in many other organizations including the March of Dimes, Montana Childrens Alliance. Montana Public Health Association, DDPAC, Governors Advisory Council on Aging, Lewis and Clark United Way, the Coast Guard Auxiliary and was a founder of small fry football in Helena. He was also a combat veteran of the Korean War. He loved Montana and the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed boating, camping and trail riding.

He also rebuilt antique automobiles and was a member of the Capital Carriages and Secrets of Speed Society. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Espelin of Helena; six children. Lois Ann Anderson and her husband, Michael, of Helena, Diana L. Kovis and her husband. Jack, of Pasco, Connie Fullmer and her husband.

Mike, of West Richland, Jenny Ziler of Helena. Rick Espelin and his wife, Sarah, of Anchorage, Alaska and Scott Espelin and his ife, Lisa, of Bozeman and his former wife and childrens mother, L. Evelyn Espelin of Helena. He had 15 grandchildren, Lucas, Jessica and Catlin Anderson, Anne, Joshua and Heather Kovis, Trent and Kylie Fullmer, Laura and Lacey Ziler, Alexandria, Levi and Eric Espelin and Austin and Aubree Espelin. He is also survived by his sister, Elsie Nickerson of Billings.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Dagna Espelin, who immigrated from Norway to Great Falls; his brother, H. Ted Espelin; and sister, Helen Stoner. The family will receive visitors at the Retz Funeral Home, Helena, on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be held at the First Christian Church in Helena on Saturday, June 20, at 3 p.m. with the Rev.

Dr. Kenneth Moore and Pastor Scott Espelin officiating. Cremation will follow and a private interment with full military honors by the Lewis and Clark County Veterans Council will be held on Monday at the Montana State Veterans Cemetery. The family is requesting that memorial donations be made to Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies, The Montana Coalition. Stanley Spohr Stanley Albert Spohr died at the age of 72 on June 16.

1998. He was the loving husband of Kathleen, beloved father of Craig Spohr of Missoula, Carol Larkin of Helena and Steven Spohr of Fern lev, and proud grandfather of Beau and Jonathan Larkin of Helena and Evan. Steven and Colleen Spohr of Fem-Iey, Nev. He is also survived bv his sisters. Elsie -Spohr and Dtorothy Folbre.

both of California. His first great-grandehild is expected in August. Stanley Spohr Menlo Park. Calif, in 1926. he was the 10th child of Herman and Emmy Spohr.

Danish immigrants. He attended Las Lomitas Grammar School and graduated from Sequoia High School in Redwood City, Calif. He served on active duty with the United States Marines during World War II at Tarawa and Iwo Jima. He attended San Mateo Junior College and in 1947 married Kathleen Ann Craig of Palo Alto, Calif. He worked for Pacific Telephone Company in California starting in 1948, as an installer, crew foreman and later an engineer and retired in 1978.

After retirement, he was an alfalfa rancher in Fallon, and worked as a contract telephone engineer and planner in several states, including Montana. A man of many talents, over the years he raised livestock, children, bams and our. spirits, and he has designed, built, rebuilt and repaired almost everything at least once. He will be missed. Wenger, age 80. of 1712 Butte Helena, died at her home June 18. 1998. of emphysema. She was bom in Valier to Winifred Dorothy (Costello i and Joseph James Hughes on Jan.

20. 1918. She graduated from Helena High School. She married Henry -Wenger Oct. 2, 1939, in Dillon.

Mrs. Wenger worked for the state as a supervisor of the Gas Tax Refund Department. She retired from the state after 22 years of service with the Public Employees Retirement Divisions. After her retirement, she owned and operated the Park Hotel. Agnes loved to visit with family and friends.

She was always worrying and caring for her family. Her recent worries were about her caring nurse, Henry, her husband of 58 years. She is preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Jim. Surviving Mrs. Wenger are her three sons, Craig Wenger of Helena, Joe Wenger and his wife, Shari, of Helena and Ed Wenger of Helena; five grandchildren, Lance, Lisa, Shauna, Blaine and Chad; one great-grandchild.

Rebecca was bom on Jan. 21,1998, at St. Peters Hospital where she remained in the neonatal nursery with medical difficulties.

On day 1 1 of life, while she remained in the hospital, she cardiac arrested. Her pediatrician and his team resuscitated for 46 minutes to get her heart beating again, Rebecca was immediately life-flighted to the Benefis East neonatal intensive care unit in Great Falls where she remained in critical condition. Rebecca is on a heart monitor and is fed through a feeding tube in her stomach. The spaghetti dinner is Friday, June 26, 1998, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and the auction begins around 6 p.m.

Retz Funeral Home 442-1550 Juanita May Cooke Juanita May Cooke, age 88, of i Helena, passed away at Fort Harrison Medical Center form natural causes. Juanita was bom March 18, 1910, to Arthur and Oma (Hood) Waugh in Effingham, 111.

She dropped out of school in the third grade to help take care of her nine brothers and sisters. This led her to become the family matriarch. In 1943 she was accepted as a member of the Women Air Force Service Pilots, better know as the WASP. Flying gave me a tremendous feeling of accomplishment, Juani-1 ta said in an interview. As a WASP class 43-W-4 pursuit pilot, she flew fighter planes including the P-39 Bell Aircobra during World War II.

After training in Sweetwater, Texas, she ferried aircraft from New Jersey to Portland into Canada. She had even flown planes to Great Falls that were going to Russia. They had the red star on the side. After the 50th anniversary of the WASP she was honored by President and Mrs. Clinton at a ceremony in the White House Rose Garden.

She was possibly the oldest living WASP member. Her other career endeavors included being a real-estate salesperson and a homemaker. Juanita was the president of the Assistance League of the National Charity League, and active member of the 4-H in Fullerton, Park and Recreation Commissioner for 14 yean, having a greenbelt named after her in Fullerton, Calif. She was also a board member of the Fullerton Recreation Riders. In her spare time she enjoyed fishing, gardening and traveling.

She married Cyril J.E. Cooke in 1 946. Juanita is preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Charles, Gordon and Dick Waugh; and two sisters. Ruby Rose and Vera Hetzel. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James A.

and Susan Cooke of Pleasant Hill, Calif, and a daughter, Jane E. Roadruck of Lynnwood. three brothers, Larry, Max and Dean Waugh; and one sister, Leone Hanke. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Aaron and STATE DEATHS Dr. Donald Espelin Dr.

Donald E. Espelin, 68, pediatrician and long time child advocate died on June 16, 1998, after a short illness. Dr. Espelin was nationally known for his advocacy work on behalf of pregnant women and young children. He lectured both nationally and locally on the issues of prevention of low birth weight and prenatal care, advocacy and coalition building and maintenance.

Dr. Espelin spent 20 years in private practice in Helena and then established the Montana Perinatal Program and was its medical director and a bureau chief in the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services. In that capacity, he established the MIAMI Project (Montanas Initiative for the Abatement of Mortality in Infants) which now provides outreach and services to high risk pregnant women in 31 counties. He established the Montana Council of Maternal and Child Health and was founder of Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies the Montana Coalition. At the time of his death, he was medical advisor to tire organization and provided technical assistance to two statewide public education campaigns.
