8A Thursday, September AreaDeaths Herb E. Ballou Herb E. Ballou, World War II veteran and long time champion of veterans' benefits died Friday, Sept. 14, 2007, surrounded by his fam- ily. A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, Oct.

6, at 2 p.m., from the Clancy United Methodist Church, with graveside serBallou vices to follow at the Montana State Veterans Cemetery at Fort Harrison at 4 p.m. Following graveside services there will be a reception at the Montana Army National Guard Service Club at Fort Harrison. Survivors include his daughter, Bonee Erickson (Joe) of Cascade; granddaughter, Carrie Erickson of Colorado: Olin Erickson of Cascade; daughter in law, Margo Brooke of Helena; granddaughter, Isabell (Mark) Stoltz of Washington; Herbert Ballou of Alaska; and Nellie Ballou of Alaska. Herb was preceded in death by his son, Monte. Herb was born Oct.

8, 1917, in Jersey City, N.J., to Jane and Martin Ballou. He attended schools in Wickford, R.I. He was a strong athlete and received track and football scholarships to Moses Brown School and the University of Maine. Track records he set in discus and hammer stood for over 20 years. Herb traveled extensively, working as a seaman and a steel worker.

In June 1943, Herb enlisted in the Army Air Corps and started pilot training, however more ground troops were needed. and his squadron became Richard Buckingham Richard Buckingham, 85, passed away after an extended illness at his son's home in Fort Benton, on Sept. 18, 2007. Richard was a third generation Montanan, born Dec. 11, 1921, to Thomas and Buckingham Hazel (Kennedy) Buckingham on Duck Creek in Broadwater County.

He was the youngest of four children. Entering the U.S. Air Buckingham Force in 1942, Richard served his country in the North African Theater during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1945. They lived in Fort Collins, where Herb attended college. The family moved to Montana in 1951, where Herb managed several dairy farms in the Deer Lodge area. Herb became a dairy inspector for the Board of Livestock, living in Bozeman and then Helena. After retirement, Herb and La Vaughn lived in Rimini, where Herb enjoyed cutting firewood and working mining claims. After LaVaughn's death in 1985, Herb married Dorothy Thomas and they enjoyed traveling extensively until Dorothy's death in 1996.

Herb's lively mind was always looking for a challenge and he attended classes at Carroll College for nearly 20 years. He was active in the community including veterans organizations, Kiwanis, Shrine, Scottish Rite, Elks, Eagles, the Methodist and Presbyterian churches, and volunteering at Fort Harrison. Cremation has taken place through Anderson Cremation Services of Helena. They made their home in Townsend and were married 61 happy years, having three children together. Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Corrine Yauney; and brothers, Bob and Tom Buckingham.
